An MLA (Member of Legislative Assembly) is a person elected by the people of the NWT to serve as their representative in the Legislative Assembly.  

Here is a list of Eligible versus Ineligible Candidates:

There are 19 districts within the NWT where an MLA is elected to represent and serve a 4-year term.
An MLA’s job is to make laws that govern the people in the NWT and to keep track and advise on how public money is spent on government programs and services.

Candidates who are elected to the Legislative Assembly serve several important roles including:

  • Cabinet Minister
  • Premier
  • Speaker
  • Committee Member
