It’s important to have a network of people to reach out to. There’s a wide range of topics that you’ll discuss over your term and it’s natural not to be a subject matter expert in everything. Don’t be afraid to reach out and ask for support when you need it.
Rebecca Alty
Mayor of Yellowknife
Rebecca Alty was born and raised in Yellowknife. After graduating from the University of Calgary with a Bachelor of Communication Studies, Rebecca returned home to work for the Government of the Northwest Territories as a Communications and Website Advisor. She served as the Executive Director for the Stanton Territorial Hospital Foundation and then the Director of Communications and Community Development for AVENS before moving on to be the Manager of Communities and External Relations for Diavik Diamond Mine Inc.
Rebecca served two terms as a Councillor with the City of Yellowknife. During that time, Rebecca considered running for mayorship and in 2018 put her name on the ballot to run for the office as Mayor. She was successful and was elected as the 15th Mayor of Yellowknife on November 5, 2018. Following in Pat McMahon’s footsteps, Rebecca is the second female to serve as Mayor of Yellowknife.
